Thursday, August 11, 2016, 7pm, Maynard Ave. United Methodist Church, 2350 Indianola Ave.
Steadfastly leading nonviolent resistance since 2004, Iyad Burnat is head of the Bil’in Popular Committee against the Israeli Wall and Settlements, which campaigns against Israel’s plan to replace the village of Bil’in with Israeli settlements. He was awarded the 2015 James Lawson Award for leadership in nonviolent resistance by the International Center on Nonviolent Conflict. Iyad’s story is that of steadfast commitment to nonviolence even though he, his family, and friends have been subjected to life-threatening violence that has achieved victories for the community. Iyad continues to maintain, “We are not against the Jews. We are against the occupation.” Iyad is featured in the documentary “Five Broken Cameras” that was filmed by his brother and a finalist nominee for an Academy Award. He is touring the U.S. with his wife, Tasheel, and 2-year-old son, Moyhi Aladeen, to promote his recently published book, Bil’in and the Nonviolent Resistance, with a forward by Miko Peled and Ilan Pappe (both Israelis). His book will be available for purchase at the event.
