This Lunch and Learn will cover the National Lawyer Guild’s legal observer program, the purpose of which is to document, monitor, and observe law enforcement at local political demonstrations, rallies, marches, and protests and hold them accountable. National Lawyers Guild legal observers work to support the Movement for Black Lives and other grassroots, radical, leftist movements and causes. The legal observer program is part of mass defense, which includes jail support, criminal defense, and civil rights litigation, all of which is meant to protect the First Amendment rights of organizers and community members.
Kevin Truitt is a board member with the Ohio Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild [NLG] and the Columbus coordinator for the NLG’s legal observer program. Kevin is also a disability rights attorney for a statewide non-profit organization. The NLG is an association of lawyers, law students, legal workers, and jailhouse lawyers functioning as an effective force in the service of the people by valuing human rights and ecosystems over property interests. The NLG has a national office and local and law school chapters, and strives to support anti-capitalist, anti-imperialist, anti-racist, abolitionist, social justice movements on the ground.
