Reader Question:

    What is Ecosexuality?

Thank you reader for your question. I would like to introduce you to my friends, Beth Stephens and Annie Sprinkle, the founders of the Ecosexual movement.

“We're changing the metaphor from 'Earth as Mother' to 'Earth as Lover'”

  • Elizabeth Stephens, Artist, Ecosexual, Professor

“We aim to make the environmental movement more sexy, fun and diverse.”

  • Annie Sprinkle, PhD, Artist, Ecosexual, Sexologist

On May 17, 2008 I attended Annie Sprinkle and Elizabeth Stephens' Green Wedding To The Earth, performed outdoors on the University of Santa Cruz campus.

This was the fourth in a series of 16 performance art weddings, collaborating with many other artists, activists, performers, writers and friends over seven years. This wedding celebrated their love with the Earth and each other, inviting performers and attendees to express their love for the Earth. We opened our heart chakra and took vows to love and cherish the Earth. It began a journey into Ecosexuality.

The journey has continued, all over the world, with so much creativity, art and expression. The weddings, performance art, presentations, walking tours, symposiums, workshops, a manifesto and now a film.

Goodbye Gauley Mountain is a tribute to all of the things Beth Stephens holds dear. It is a profound, intimate and gorgeous love story, with a heartbreaking edge. Massive destruction of the Appalachian Mountains versus her heart, homeland of West Virginia, her wife Annie Sprinkle and their lover, The Earth.

This movement has taken off in so many directions, unique to interpretation, how nature inspires pleasure. The first step is to find out if you identify as an Ecosexual.

Do you get a thrill when communing with nature? Could this thrill be a sexual turn-on? Would you like to begin a relationship with the Earth? Commit and make a vow? Once you accept the Earth as Lover, there are many ways to move forward as an Environmentalist and Ecosexual.

25 Ways To Make Love To The Earth  – by Elizabeth Stephens and Annie Sprinkle

  1. Tell the Earth, “I love you. I can't live without you.”

  2. You may feel embarrassed to be lovers with the Earth – Let it go.

  3. Spend time with her.

  4. Ask her what she likes, wants and needs – then try to give it to her.

  5. Massage the Earth with your feet.

  6. Admire her views often.

  7. Circulate erotic energy with her.

  8. Smell her.

  9. Taste her.

  10. Touch her all over.

  11. Hug and stroke her trees.

  12. Talk dirty to her plants.

  13. Swim naked in her waters.

  14. Lay on top of her, or let her get on top.

  15. Do a nude dance for her.

  16. Sing to her.

  17. Kiss and lick her.
