This month’s program: “The Human Dilemma and What Death Can Teach Us About Living”

A common misunderstanding regarding philosophy is that it focuses on the question of the meaning of life. In fact, very few philosophers work on this question. However, although not recently produced, there is a substantial body of work from a few philosophers and many literary figures that have examined the purpose and goals of human life. In “A Good Death: The Human Dilemma and What Death Can Teach Us About Living,” Dr. Amy White will summarize the condition of humanity that has led many to consider this question. After this summation, White will offer a brief overview of her recent work regarding death. Dr. White will suggest that working towards a good death may be the key to cracking the human dilemma and living a meaningful life.

Dr. Amy White is an associate philosophy professor at Ohio University Zanesville. She is author of Virtually Obscene: The Case for an Uncensored Internet and a wide assortment of articles. Dr. White’s current research focuses on medical ethics, neuroenhancement and the philosophy of death.
