Friday, October 21, 2:30-5:30pm, OSU Faculty Club [Grand Lounge], 181 Oval Dr. S.

Please join The Center for the Study of Religion at The Ohio State University for a Symposium on Religion and Sexuality Post-Obergefell. Last year’s Supreme Court ruling that requires states to allow same-sex marriages is just one signal milestone in changing civil law concerning marriage and sexuality. How are participants in the religious tradition(s) you study engaging with this new civil environment? What resources does the tradition offer to adherents to adapt to and/or resist the changing social and legal context? What do you see happening in the next few years?

This symposium will include the following presentations:

• “Neither Male nor Female: Evangelicals, HB2, and Trans Rights in Post-Obergefell America,” by Amy DeRogatis, Michigan State University

• “The End of Days, the Making of Christian Martyrs, and the Criminalization of Christianity: The Culture Wars in a Post-Obergefell America,” by Julie Ingersoll, University of North Florida

• “Same Sex Marriage in Judaism: Some Legal and Mystical Perspectives,” by Shaul Magid, Indiana University

• “The Changing Fiqh of Islam on Sexuality and Marriage,” by Khaleel Mohammed, San Diego State University

David Brakke (History) will act as respondent for the four presentations.

Sponsored by The Center for the Study of Religion at The Ohio State University.
