Saturday, September 15, 12-2pm, First Unitarian Universalist Church, 93 W. Weisheimer Rd.

The monthly meeting of the local affiliate of the national Move to Amend organization that is calling for a U.S. Constitutional amendment to reverse several U.S. Supreme Court decisions during the past century and thereby to firmly establish that corporations are not people and that money is not free speech. Find out what can be done locally to restore democracy! Bring a brown bag lunch.

During this month’s meeting, Jaime Pardo will lead a discussion of the history that had led to the birth of the Move to Amend organization in 2009. We will review the corporate takeover of American democracy, beginning with the Fourteenth Amendment in 1868, the Santa Clara County v. Southern Pacific Railroad Company U.S. Supreme Court ruling in 1886, and continuing with the Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission U.S. Supreme Court decision in 2010. Anyone (beginner or historian) who is interested in a deeper understanding of how this country went off-course from being a democratic republic is welcome to attend and participate.
