Protest

Monday, February 26, 12:30pm, Nationwide Insurance Headquarters, One Nationwide Plaza, W. Nationwide Blvd.

Tell Nationwide: “Insure Our Future, Not Fossil Fuels”

In 2023, the United States experienced a record number of weather-and climate-related disasters that each caused $1 billion or more in damages: 28 severe storms, floods, wildfires, winter storms, hurricanes, and droughts, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

The insurance industry stands on the front lines of this climate crisis. Every time a climate-related fire, flood, or storm damages or destroys an insured person’s home or business, they expect their insurance policy to help foot the bill for repairs and rebuilding.

Unfortunately, as climate events become more common, major insurance companies have begun to cancel or restrict coverage in climate-vulnerable states. In September, Nationwide, headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, announced that it would not renew homeowners’ insurance for over 10,500 policy holders in coastal North Carolina due to hurricane risk.

Yet at the same time, Nationwide invests $4.5 billion in coal, oil, and gas. It’s wrong for insurance companies to invest the premiums we pay in the causes of the climate crisis, then leave us holding the bag when climate-fueled disasters strike.

Please join us on Monday, February 26, at 12:30pm, to protest these actions and educate citizens about why they should find better insurance that doesn’t make the climate crisis worse. We will be on the High Street sidewalk just outside Nationwide headquarters, One Nationwide Plaza, W. Nationwide Blvd., in downtown Columbus, Ohio. You can find a map of nearby parking options here.

Please register for this event using this form so that we will be able to keep you informed of any last-minute changes in plans such as weather delays or street closures. Thank you!

This event is co-sponsored by Third Act Ohio and is part of the Insure Our Future Global Week of Action. Read more about the impending insurance climate crisis here.
