One of my favorite sections of an afternoon. I'm eating lunch in my living room while reading a new book: Fearless Vampire Killers….Bad Brains Photographs by Akashic Books———> By Glen E. Friedman.
I now am using a Flex Capacitor. Now, I'm at A7 in the 1980’s New York looking at Bad Brains perform is a space the size of either Skylab or the Legion of Doom. I'm looking at PMA inspiring cultural evolution in the context of rejection of our fascist government.
In Fearless Vampire Killers, Friedman follows Bad Brains from A7 into the L.A. Sunset Strip. A7 is a small NY punk venue. L.A. is where Bad Brains sneak Black Flag on stage because Black Flag was banned because of punk riots. Fearless Vampire Killers is Glen E. Friedman in a moment working for skateboard media while participating in hardcore punk. Punk, and Hip Hop unleashed Bad Brains, Dead Kennedys, Public Enemy, BDP, Beastie Boys etc. Friedman took iconic flicks of all of these icons.
Punk and Hip Hop turned 80’s fascism into Hip Hop and grunge which changed all of society. Friedman is legendary for documenting our culture’s icons – Dischord, Def Jam, and of course BAD BRAINS.
Friedman included 90 black and white photos from 81-82. Bad Brains Daryl Jennifer, and HR add commentary into Fearless Vampire’s Killers. We witness Friedman's relationship of being a skateboard punk kid at a show and then having his work document legendary moments.
Friedman’s photos inspired organic cultural evolution with the visuals of Bad Brains and later Public Enemy. We follow a trajectory from Friedman importing moshing from L.A. into New York City.
I’m curious what were people doing without moshing at shows? Moshing would be a downgrade from Bogleing.
We are looking at photography book. I’m a heterosexual male who understands why women’s bodies are sexy from an compositional objectification. While I ain’t attracted to men. From a presentation, you understand minimal photographs worked because of Bad Brains’ appearance.
Did HR visit a gym or do jumping-jacks? If Friedman went from shooting Bad Brains into Public Enemy, Tribe Called Quest, KRS-1 and every pioneer. Slick Rick wasn’t political perse.
In Friedman’s 80’s Slick Rick’s album cover, Rick the Ruler looked dapper, and debonair. Slick Rick is a Democratic voter. I don’t know if you need to know if Slick Rick votes. Not Slick Rick photos nor Rick The Ruler’s voting choices are in Fearless Vampire Killers. Slick Rick enlisted Friedman for Great Adventures of Slick Rick.
I just am offering a perspective of who took these Bad Brains picture in context of culture revolutions which affected our government. This does show a change from the Reagan/Bush. In 2025, Friedman’s likes Democracy Now, Bernie Sanders and AOC.
Friedman’s eye for Hip Hop rebellion and cool found rendering from Bad Brains’ concerts. I'm technically a Hip Hop journalist.
In Fearless Vampire Killer, Bad Brains’ HR says he isn’t political but aimed at aspiring positive cultures. Does reggae’s influence on the Bad Brains affect your view in regards of colonialism? Does Bad Brains, and Hip Hop affect your view about racism and genocide?
Rage Against The Machines Zach De La Rocha wrote the outro of Fearless Vampire Killers. Shepard Fairy’s paints a mural Bad Brains’ with some of Friedman’s CBGB pictures in Fearless Vampire Killers.
Did Rage Against the Machine affect a mass of people’s dislike of colonialism?
"Do you think Hip Hop, punk and skating will defeat fascism again in 2025 via cultural evolution?”
