Fists and someone with Occupy flag and words General Strike

Friday, Feberuary 17, 7 AM - 5 PM

Join us to participate in the National General Strike in Ohio! For ways to support & take part, visit progressohio.org/supportthestrike.

Friday, February 17th has been established as a National General Strike to support the Constitution and defend and further America’s commitments to progressive causes. Those commitments include, but are not limited to, the following:
Upholding Democracy
Human Rights
Environmental Concerns
Ethics In Public Service

Participants pledge to be non-violent. On the day of the strike, we will not got to work (unless absolutely necessary). We will not go to school (unless necessary). We will not spend any money (unless necessary). Instead, we will demonstrate our dissent from unconstitutional governance through volunteer organizing, community gatherings and progressive activities being organized at the local/personal level. Think of this as a day of service. Instead of work, strikers will dedicate their time to serving neighbors in need. Use this event page to find your people, make your plan, and spread the word.

Events are being organized in various locations during the strike. We will post links to Ohio events as they are shared with us.

Ways to Participate
1. Support hungry Ohioans in your community by volunteering or donating money or non-perishable food to your local food bank. Hunger is Ohio is on the rise and 1 in 4 kids are unsure where their next meal will come from. Visit ohiofoodbanks.org or progressohio.org/supportthestrike for a list of food banks in your area. If more convenient, you can drop off your non-perishable food donations to ProgressOhio's office on Friday, February 17 - 35 E. Gay St., Columbus, OH 43215.
2. Contact your State Legislators about the budget. Tell them Ohio should not be cutting taxes for the wealthiest but should be investing tax dollars to stop Ohio’s drug epidemic, ease hunger, restore school staffing, increase access to birth control, and make sure our water is safe to drink. Find the contact number for your state legislators: act.progressohio.org/call/call-state-legislators-budget
3. Contact your Members of Congress and let them know why you support the strike. Find their contact numbers: act.progressohio.org/call/call-members-congress
4. Using the hashtag #BreakLunch on social media, take time on your lunch break to disrupt and participate if you're not otherwise able to strike. Let people know what you are doing in service to your community on this day when you post.

We'll be updating this event page regularly as organizations and individuals make volunteering opportunities available around Ohio.
