Information about the event

Three comics and two records are being released by Nix Comics in September, 2018. All three comics will debut the week of Cartoon Crossroads Columbus (CXC), beginning with a release party at Used Kids Records Thursday, September 27th from 6 to 8pm. The Used Kids event include live music by local cartoonists Bob Ray Starker and Matt Wyatt. The latest issue of Nix Comics’ garage rock themed horror and humor anthology. Stories include:

 

  • Eddie & Squid Return from the Dead by Ken Eppstein and Gideon Kendall:The outlaw bikers who learned the truth about the afterlife in NCQ #4 make their return when summoned back from the dead by a vengeful police detective.

  • The Vicar: Night of A 1000 Eyes by Ken Eppstein and Michael Neno: A strange noise that only the Vicar can hear is permeating a suburban development.  As he and his guitarist Alberto approach the source, they soon find that they are being watched by an unearthly presence!

    • The Vicar and his choir are recurring characters with stories in every issue of Nix Comics Quarterly.  The Vicar leads a garage rock band, dresses like a priest and slays the monsters they find hiding in the  seedy bars he tours.

  • Ana Tatsura Meets Josephine Six-Fifteen by Ken Eppstein & Pat Redding Scanlon: The world's greatest sinner stops off for a drink at a honky tonk only to get caught up defending a struggling young artist modern from country music squares and  a creature from hell!

  • Bus Stop Ned Is Worried About His Appearance : Hey, you may think that it's easy to look as suave as Ned does at the bus stop every morning, but sometimes he needs a little reaffirmation from his fellow commuters...

  • Bus Stop Ned Is Off The Grid by Matt Miner and Matt LeJeune: Ever get the feeling you're being watched?  Ned does... ALL THE TIME…

    • Bus stop ned is a recurring character who appears in every issue of Nix Comics Quarterly. His dialog is taken directly from conversations overheard on public transit.

  • Did It Really Happen: Klaus Nomi Plays The Midwest by Ken Eppstein & Mark Rudolph: What happens when contratenor Klaus Nomi, beloved by fans of David Bowie and the New York City Art Scene, gets stuck at an Ohio nightclub?  Probably not what you think!

The third and final installment of comics adapted from Bela Koe-Krompecher’s popular blog about lost friends and 90s indie music culture. Illustration by Andy Bennett.  This final issue focuses on Bela’s closest relationships, with singer songwriters Jenny Mae and Jerry Wick.

Jenny Mae ‘N Jerry Wick will be released as a comic and record set (Limited to 300 copies) and in a comic-only version.  The record features the previously unreleased “To Love” by Jenny Mae and the previously CD-only “Love Death + Photosynthesis” by Jerry Wick.

The Collected Pander Bear features the entire run of the 2011-2012 webcomic with updated art and lettering and a cartoon previously only seen by retailers in the 2012 Nix Comics wholesale catalog.  Written by Ken Eppstein and illustrated by Bob Ray Starker, Pander Bear follows the always-losing efforts of Nix Comics’ unsavory mascot to promote indie comics.
 

The Collected Pander Bear will be released as a comic and record set (limited to 300 copies) and in a comic-only version. The record features “panderized” Cheap Trick and Stiv Bators cover songs by cartoonist Matt Wyatt’s band, the 3 Speeds.  Wyatt’s chops as a musician includes being the Guitarist for Columbus indie rock heroes, Great Plains.
