Few revolutionary leaders are as misunderstood and misrepresented as Helen Keller. Revisionist and ableist narratives, such as the popular movie “The Miracle Worker,” characterize her as a passive victim of circumstance. In reality, Keller was a firebrand labor organizer and socialist who took her place among other leaders of organizations such as the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW) and the Socialist Party. Keller also contributed to the Marxist tradition a foundation for theorizing disability under capitalism, and her insights remain crucial for understanding ableism today.

Join us as we read an essay written by Keith Rosenthal on the politics and legacy of Helen Keller and discuss how they relate to our current struggles.
