Wednesday, March 14, 8am-5pm, Fawcett Center, 2400 Olentangy River Rd.

Traumatic Brain Injury [TBI] is defined by the Traumatic Brain Injury Model Systems National Data Center as follows: “Damage to the brain tissue caused by an external mechanical force.” Each year, almost 120,000 Ohioans will be treated in emergency rooms or hospitalized due to a TBI. In addition to this, TBI is the “signature injury” of the Afghanistan and Iraq conflicts and is responsible for bringing thousands of new cases of TBI home to Ohio.

TBI crosses all segments of the society and all demographic groups with far-reaching life-long implications. It is a unique event for each individual and, as such, produces myriad effects which vary according to factors of age, gender, severity of injury, personal psychology, family circumstances, and medical access. Addressing this injury demands a multifaceted and individualized approach to assessment, treatment, rehabilitation, and personal planning. Research is showing that best practices in acute care and treatment, accompanied by implementation of established standards of care, are vital in both promoting optimal recovery and also in preventing many of the complications that exact a huge toll of human, financial, and societal loss.

This program will offer a rare opportunity for anyone to access a truly comprehensive, multidisciplinary education event that will broaden their understanding of the neurobiology of traumatic brain injury, grasp the complexities of its effects on cognition, physiology, emotions, and psychology, and understand how treatment modalities can and must be adapted according to the unique individual with his/her unique injury.
