Monday, February 29, 6:30-8pm, St. John’s Episcopal Church, 1003 W. Town St.

Join us at St. John’s for an evening of learning about fair food and farmworker justice! We will begin by watching a 25-minute version of the film, “Food Chains” (http://www.foodchainsfilm.com/) and will later hear from a member/worker of the Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) who will share from his experience doing farmworker organizing in Immokalee, Florida.

The Coalition of Immokalee Workers (CIW) is a worker-based human rights organization internationally recognized for its achievements in the fields of social responsibility, human trafficking, and gender-based violence at work. The CIW is in Ohio working with Ohio Fair Food, the Student Farmworker Alliance and other local organizations. This organization work will culminate on Sunday, March 6th at 12:30pm with a protest march from Goodale Park, 120 W. Goodale St., up High St., to Tuttle Park.

In Ohio, this coalition is focusing on the Ohio-based Wendy’s Company. Of the five largest fast food corporations in the country — McDonald’s, Subway, Burger King, Taco Bell and Wendy’s — Wendy’s stands alone as the only one who has refused to join the Fair Food Program and respect the rights and dignity of farmworkers in its supply chain. The Fair Food Program requires members to pay farmworkers an additional 1 cent per pound of tomatoes that they pick and to meet certain basic workplace health and safety criteria.
