Friday, November 18, 6-8pm, Turkish American Society of Ohio Columbus, 2885 W. Dublin-Granville Rd.
The failed July 15 coup attempt was a historic moment in Turkish history. Both Turkish society and the world celebrated the fact that an antidemocratic intervention in the government was prevented. The military officers suspected of planning and carrying out actions against the elected government should be investigated and brought to justice. The Turkish government has every right to pursue these individuals, using all the methods the law allows.
The actions of President Erdogan’s government in the immediate aftermath of the coup, however, constitute a mass purge rather than a proper investigation. In addition to the officers who were accused of taking part in the coup, thousands of soldiers who did not take part in the coup, as well as tens of thousands of civilians, including journalists, teachers and judges, were detained and arrested within days of the attempt.
Niagara Foundation and Turkish American Society of Ohio are honored to jointly sponsor an open-to-the-public event to discuss civil society perspectives on the failed military coup attempt and the mass purges. The event will take place at Friday, November 18, 6pm, at the Turkish American Society of Ohio. This will be a great opportunity to meet with Turkish Americans and hear their perspectives on the failed coup attempt.
