Saturday, April 14, 11:30am-2pm, Shepard Branch Library, 850 N. Nelson Rd.
This month’s program: “Selfish Jerks? How healthy self-interest is good for you and those around you”
Many of us, growing up, have been taught that selfishness is a bad thing, that selfish people will be bad for you, and that being selfless is the way to be a good person.
In this class, HCCO Coordinator Rose Hagalaz will challenge the traditional notion of “selfishness” and will ask the class to examine the potential benefits of acting in your own self-interest instead of always trying to put others first.
This class will include some interactive “game play” at the beginning of the presentation that will require the attendees to partner up to multiple other attendees in the room. Materials for this will be provided.
Rose will assert that, if it is done correctly, acting in your self-interest will not only help you to cultivate better and healthier relationships but it can actually help you to have more to give to those you love and care about without incurring high costs to your own mental and physical health. This part of the class will discuss some strategies for setting boundaries and for making sure that your own needs are met, and will suggest some ideas about how sometimes things that benefit you will also benefit the people around you and vice versa.
Join us at 11:30am for pizza; the meeting begins at 12noon.
Please note: this is a different meeting location for HCCO.
