It is with great pleasure that we inform you that our partners at Showing Up for Racial Justice National has reached an important milestone that is worthy of our acknowledgement and celebration. On Sept 11th, it was the 10-year anniversary of SURJ. Our chapter has benefited from participating in this national network that enables us to connect with anti-racist white people across the country to share in skills, celebrate our victories, and learn from white folks who have been in social justice movements for decades. Being part of the SURJ network has been instrumental to our ability to organize locally, while maintaining a long view collective vision of ending white support for white supremacy across the country. We will reflect on the organizing SURJ has accomplished these past years. We will also be discussing mutual aid and looking at ways to get involved in mutual aid projects in the city.  We will be having an informal potluck, so feel free to bring food, snacks or drinks. (Not required!).  What do we mean by “mutual aid”? “Mutual aid is a term to describe people giving each other needed material support, trying to resist the control dynamics, hierarchies and system-affirming, oppressive arrangements of charity and social services. Mutual aid projects are a form of political participation in which people take responsibility for caring for one another and changing political conditions, not just through symbolic acts or putting pressure on their representatives in government, but by actually building new social relations that are more survivable.” (Definition from BigDoorBrigade).  Location:  Northside Library Branch, 1423 N High St.  For more information, contact SURJcolumbusoh@gmail.com
