This month we are joined by Brad Lepper, Curator of Archaeology and Manager of Archaeology and Natural History at the Ohio History Connection. He will be telling us about Seip Mound.

Seip Mound is one of the largest mounds built by Ohio’s ancient American Indian Hopewell culture, which lived in southern Ohio between about 1 and 400 CE. The mound was excavated in the 1920s by the Ohio History Connection. Among the remarkable artifacts uncovered by the archaeologists were five small spheres of black soapstone, each of which had been engraved with abstract designs. The archaeologists concluded they were marbles in spite of the fact that the game of marbles was unknown in America prior to its introduction by Europeans. In this presentation, Dr. Lepper presents an alternative interpretation based on collaborative research with Ben Barnes, Chief of the Shawnee Tribe. The Seip stones may be the remains of the oldest known drum in eastern North America.
