Saturday, July 24, 7-8pm, this on-line event requires advance registration

Join us from the comfort of home as our “Pleasures of the Cup” series goes virtual! Create drinks along with our mixologist as we bring the outlandish and sometimes unbelievable history of medicine to life. While thankfully our medical technologies and techniques have improved greatly in recent years, there is certainly a long history of dubious, strange, and seemingly miraculous cures lingering in our past. Learn about this and dive into the surreal world of historic cures!

Participants must be 21 and over in order to attend. Alcohol is not provided. Advance tickets are required. You will receive a link to the presentation about two hours before the start time.

Segments during the program

Segment 1: Medical Miracles

This session will focus on some of the most interesting and unique stories that medical history has to offer. Stories will include an 18th-century man who was run over by a brick cart and survived, a railway worker who received some unique brain surgery by way of railroad spike, and a young man who ate a bowl full of broken glass on a bet. Our narrator will tell the stories of some of these awful experiences, and how they were resolved, alongside “Drunk History-esque” reenactments.

Segment 2: Two Truths and a Lie

Can you figure out which story is true, and which ones we completely made up? In this session, folks will have a chance to play a game involving two truths and a lie, based around strange medical situations from history. The presenter will read all three lines, which could also be called up on the screen (especially if we film via green screen), they will give a pause, then will reveal the correct answer.

Segment 3: Barber Shop Surgery

Need a haircut, some dental work, and maybe some light bleeding? Let’s take a trip to the barber! Learn all about the wide and varied skills expected of an early 19th century barber — including, but not limited to, cutting hair, pulling teeth, and doing minor surgery. We’ll have someone come into the barbershop looking to have some dental work done, and the barber will explain (and showcase) all of their various skills. The customer will quickly decide that, perhaps, their tooth doesn’t hurt quite so bad, and that they don’t really need the surgery after all.

Segment 4: 1920s Health and Wellness Ad

Finish off the night with our 1920s Health and Wellness advocate, who is convinced (and trying to convince others) of the positive benefits of Radium. They will talk all about the supposed benefits of radioactivity and will have plenty of testimonials to share. At the very end, we’ll include a quick wrap-up with the various and sundry (and deadly) side effects.

Please note: because this is a webinar format, a participant registration entitles you to one unique link that will allow one computer or mobile device to watch the webinar. You are welcome to have multiple viewers using that one participating device.
