Monday, November 29, 12noon-1pm, this on-line event requires advance registration
The 2021-22 COMPAS [Conversations On Morality, Politics And Society] Program on Markets and the Open Society hosts Dr. Helen McCabe for a discussion of her new book, John Stuart Mill, Socialist, with CEHV [Center for Ethics and Human Values] Director Piers Norris Turner.
The conversation will examine how Mill’s interest in socialism should inform our understanding of his political ideals and the relationship of socialism to open society.
Dr. McCabe will introduce the themes from her book during the webinar. It will not be expected that audience members will already have read the book. This event is open to the public and accessible to a broad audience.
Helen McCabe is a political theorist in the School of Politics and International Relations at the University of Nottingham (UK). She is the author of leading articles on Mill’s socialism, feminism, philosophy of persuasion, and his authorial relationship with Harriet Taylor Mill. In her new book, John Stuart Mill, Socialist, she argues that Mill’s commitment to a “qualified” socialism should inform our understanding of his long-term political project much more than is commonly accepted.
