Pedestrian deaths continue to climb, so why do we focus so much on vehicle safety for people inside of the car?

If you drive a car, you’re sitting among the product of millions of dollars of research and development. Airbags, seatbelts, and “crumble zones” surround you, protecting you from potential impacts. Vehicle safety has increased tremendously over the last several decades — but only for the people inside of the car. Those of us who walk and roll have previously received little in the way of protection when it comes to cars and trucks. That may change soon, but only if we all begin educating ourselves (and speaking up when given the chance).

Join America Walks on Thursday, May 12, at 2pm, to learn about how, for the first time in U.S. history, federal regulators are taking steps to help ensure that vehicles will be safer for those outside cars.

Because of a new rule, NHTSA [National Highway Traffic Safety Administration] would finally begin rating cars — on the five-star scale — for impacts to pedestrians. New crash avoidance technologies — like automatic emergency braking — that have major potential to reduce deaths and injuries — will be subject for testing and in some cases mandated. In this webinar, we’ll talk about this important change and how to get involved.

Panelists include:

• Catherine Chase, President of Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety

• Sindhu Bharadwaj, Program Manager of Policy at NACTO [National Association of City Transportation Officials]
