Come for a free tour of the native plants in the Sunny Glen Garden on Sunday, July 17, 11am-1pm. I’ll do my best to have them labeled; during the tour you can:

• See what these native Ohio plants look like as they mature

• Learn about their pollinator relationships

• Find out which native Ohio plants are better suited for different environments:

• Wetland plants/plants that can handle wet feet but do well in the heat

• Prairie and meadow plants that do well in full or partial sun

• Woodland plants that do best in shade or partial shade

• And how you can obtain them with no cost to you, like I did . . .

• Why might you be interested in having a perennial native plant flower garden instead of an annual ornamental one?

• Save time and money because these plants return each year on their own (perennial), so you do not need to purchase and plant every year

• Save precious resources because they require no extra watering, even in the heat of our Ohio summers?

• Do not require you to purchase and add fertilizers and have fewer diseases and pests, as they are well suited and adapted to survive in their Ohio environment.

• Have deep root systems that increase the soil’s capacity to store water when we get these heavy spring and fall rains which can prevent flooding and avoid polluting our rivers and streams with stormwater runoff

• Sequester or remove carbon from the air that contributes to global warming

• Provide shelter and food for our pollinators, birds, and other wildlife

• Promote biodiversity and stewardship of our natural heritage

• Beautify and increase scenic values for all to enjoy!

These are just a few of the reasons why you might choose native perennial flowering plants for your garden, in addition to, or instead of annual ornamental plants which may look pretty but do not have any of the other beneficial aspects mentioned above!
