Saturday, October 8, 12noon-3pm, Columbus Metropolitan Library [Parsons Branch], 1113 Parsons Ave. [this event will also be occurring via Zoom]

The Humanist Monthly Program is our longest running event and still a community favorite. In the old days it used to be called “Going to HCCO” and we still like to think of it as our flagship event.

Going forward, our meetings will be hybrid. You can meet us in-person or attend online.

The formal presentation will begin at 12noon. Pizza and beverages will be provided starting at 11:30am.

This month we will be joined by former HCCO President Rita Hallaveld.

Rita Hallaveld (she/her) is passionate about community building and organizing with an eye toward addressing the root causes of issues. With a background in social work, she previously worked as a mental health therapist for a decade and served as a board member and event host for HCCO. A single parent of a preschooler, Rita currently dedicates her spare time to organizing with Columbus Democratic Socialists of America’s Childcare Campaign and volunteers on the board of Camp Quest Ohio. She is an outdoor enthusiast, with hiking and rock climbing among her favorite activities.

Childcare for All in Central Ohio

We believe that every worker deserves a living wage, every child deserves to be nurtured, and all families deserve to be supported and thrive.

However, the reality in Central Ohio is that a single mother of two making $15 an hour spends half her income on childcare and doesn’t have enough left over to pay for food, rent, healthcare, and other basic needs. And childcare workers, who are mostly women and disproportionately Black and brown women, make poverty-level wages.

Rita will talk about Columbus Democratic Socialists of America’s campaign to bring high quality, universal childcare to Central Ohio.

Hosted by Humanist Community of Central Ohio.
