Wednesday, September 27, 7pm, this on-line event requires advance registration

We’ve all heard horror stories of not getting paid for months for freelance assignments. Earlier this year, Columbus City Council introduced a new ordinance designed to address late payments for independent contractors. As of May 2023, Columbus-based companies are required to pay freelancers by the date agreed to in their contract, or within 30 days of when services are rendered if a specific date is not specified, for freelance jobs contracted for $250 or more. Columbus joins New York City, Los Angeles, and Seattle in introducing payment protections for freelancers.

Come join ASMP [American Society of Media Photographers] Ohio Valley and its panelists to find out how the law came to be, what are its actual requirements and what to do if the client doesn’t fulfill them, and how your city or state can adopt these protections as well.

The panel includes people who played a key role in the law’s passage: Kirsten Estose (Legislative Analyst in Columbus City Council’s Legislative Research Office); Eric Thurm (National Writers Union, Freelance Solidarity Project); and Taylor Dorrell (Freelance writer, photographer, local organizer for Freelance Solidarity Project).

This event is free for all creatives.

The Zoom link for signing in will be e-mailed to all registered attendees on the evening of the event.

The cut-off time for registration will be 6pm on Wednesday, September 27.

Hosted by American Society of Media Photographers [ASMP], Ohio Valley chapter.
