While great progress has been made in preventing and treating HIV/AIDS, it continues to be a reality and a risk for many people. According to the CDC, in 2021, an estimated 1.2 million people in the United States were living with HIV. LGBTQ+ communities are disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS, with male-to-male sexual contact accounting for 67% of all new HIV diagnoses. Additionally, intersectionality continues to prove disproportional infection rates further. High stigmatization about HIV/AIDS results in fear of testing, lower rates of seeking healthcare and social support, and lower mental health.
In this OutTalk episode, we will dive into the truth about HIV/AIDS, how healthcare providers can create a safe environment to help treat and educate patients, and what we can do to open up the conversation within our medical teams and social groups.
