Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) has increasingly become a nuclear weapons production site. Last month, the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA) released its draft Site-Wide Environmental Impact Statement (SWEIS), which is how LANL reports on the anticipated impacts from weapons production at the New-Mexico-based lab.

One key driver of this expansion is the increased production of plutonium pit bomb cores, the critical component of thermonuclear weapons. However, the production of plutonium pits for nuclear weapons is unnecessary and unsafe.

The Union of Concerned Scientists invites you to a training webinar on how to write and submit a comment to hold LANL accountable for expansion risks and advocate for proper protection of the public and the environment. It is crucial that the NNSA receives input from concerned scientists and the public.

Public Comment Training: Hold Los Alamos National Laboratory Accountable for Expansion Risks

Date: Tuesday, February 18

Time: 4-5pm

Register for the training webinar today.

The release of the draft SWEIS kicked off a 60-day comment period lasting until March 11, providing the opportunity for members of the public and the scientific community to engage and push back on this unnecessary expansion. According to UCS, the draft SWEIS does not properly consider the public and environmental risks that come with these proposed plans. Your voice is critical in opposing the expansion of operations at LANL and the production of new plutonium pits.

Join Union of Concerned Scientists for a comment-writing training to learn more about the draft SWEIS and how you can submit your comment to the NNSA at this pivotal moment — register today.
