300+ childcare providers across Ohio will close their doors and host events as part of Community Change Action’s Fourth Annual National Day Without Child Care. This day of action comes on the heels of Ohio providers not receiving payments they depend on through the Child Care and Development Block Grant (CCDBG) for multiple weeks in a row – payments that have been frozen or delayed because of interference from DOGE.
Ohio’s providers depend on these payments to be able to keep their doors open and to keep supporting families, many of them low income who will be unable to work if their access to childcare is stripped. This interruption of funding that families need also comes as Congress enters the markup phase of their budget, where lawmakers will seek to gut Medicaid, SNAP, Head Start, and other basic needs programs.
The harm that these cuts and delays have on real people, who are already dealing with the rising cost of living, is building to a boiling point. Providers deserve to be paid for their work and families shouldn’t lose access to a healthy start for their kids because of politicians in D.C. meddling in the programs they rely on. It’s unacceptable, and we will hold our leaders at every level accountable for this failure.
That’s why Ohio is showing up and shutting it down this Day Without Child Care – there’s too much at stake for our families and the systems our communities rely on.
