The National Lawyers Guild [NLG] is the nation’s oldest progressive bar association; the Ohio NLG is one of that organization’s largest chapters. This “Lunch and Learn” will cover the NLG legal observer program’s work in Central Ohio.

Legal observers are trained volunteers who document the activities of law enforcement at political demonstrations to hold them accountable and protect the First Amendment rights of organizers and community members. NLG legal observers support the work of organizers for racial justice, LGBTQ liberation, and a free Palestine. The legal observer program is part of mass defense, which includes jail support, criminal defense, and civil rights litigation.

Sumac Gray is the Columbus representative for the state board of the Ohio Chapter of the National Lawyers Guild and is an active legal observer in central Ohio. Sumac Gray is a recent graduate of The Ohio State University Moritz College of Law, where they led the student chapter of the NLG. Sumac works in indigent criminal defense and has “legal observed” at many of the largest Ohio protests since the Summer of 2020.
