Learn more at ICNC Free Online Course 2026. The course had attendees from 30 countries including Ukraine, and offers history, tactics, successes and failures of nonviolent movements throughout the world fighting fascism and authoritarian regimes. The good news is that nonviolent movements have been more successful than violent movements.

The readings and case studies emphasize the trifecta of nonviolent resistance movements: unity, planning and commitment to nonviolence. The course features a film about Otpor! (resistance!), the youth-led Serbian resistance group formed in the 1990s against the dictator Slobodan Milosevic.

The importance of reinforcing nonviolence is exemplified by the 2011 student sit-in protest at UC Davis. One pop can or book bag thrown at officers could have completely changed the outcome of this Occupy movement protest, but students and onlookers held fast to their commitment to nonviolence, and officers finally gave up and left after arresting a handful of students.
