The Coalition of Immokalee Workers started a boycott of an iconic central Ohio-based fast-food chain over a year ago. This was after the company stopped sourcing its tomatoes from Florida instead of joining the CIW’s Fair Food Program to protect Florida farmworkers from exploitation.

Wendy’s has responded to the boycott by quibbling over why they don’t want to pay a penny-per-pound premium for Florida tomatoes to support a living wage for the workers who harvest them. One thing that Wendy’s spokespersons don’t want to talk about is sexual violence in the agricultural industry.

On October 23, women of the CIW led a protest in the rain outside Wendy’s Dublin headquarters to raise awareness of widespread sexual harassment and rape in Mexican agribusinesses, where Wendy’s now sources tomatoes and other produce. They were joined by faith communities and members of the Student/Farmworker Alliance (SFA) at Ohio State University.

Saturday, October 28, 1-4pm, beginning immediately west of the intersection of N. High St. and E. 15th Ave. [east of the Wexner Center for the Arts, 1871 N. High St.]; and then marching to the OSU Stadium, 411 Woody Hayes Dr.   On October 16, Shelley Meyer [wife of OSU football coach Urban Meyer] made it very clear that she does not support Colin Kaepernick and his fight against police brutality towards People Of Color.   When 10TV news posted a tweet about Kaepernick having filed grievances against the NFL, she responded, “What-ever. He made his choices.”   It is absolutely unacceptable for the wife of a football coach to condemn the actions of the NFL and “take a knee.” We must stand (better yet kneel) in solidarity with Kaepernick where it needs to be done the most: The Shoe.   The Meyers need to know that we do not accept Shelley and her negative reaction to Kaepernick; we certainly do not accept her half-hearted apology that she had posted later.   The below details of this event have been locked in.   1pm: Meet at the pillars in front of the Wexner Center of the Arts [west of the intersection of on High St. and 15th Ave.].

BACKGROUND: Prisoners in struggle at Toledo Correctional Institution (TCI) have requested your assistance. Their cage is being converted into a maximum security concentration camp. People sent to maximum security prisons are subject to prolonged solitary confinement for a minimum of two years. According to the UN Special Rapporteur on Torture, "some studies said confinement after seven days created a long-term psychological impact.." We view the practice of solitary confinement as a form of psychological torture and torture is prohibited under international humanitarian law. Therefore, we need to ban the practice of solitary confinement.

TCI officials are also engaged in the practice of free speech retaliation and this practice is a violation of the U.S. Constitution. TCI officials are retaliating against TCI prisoners who speak out against the use of solitary confinement. TCI guards have also violated first amendment rights of prisoners by censoring their mail on the basis of political perspective. This censorship practice is illegal.
