The Columbus Black Theatre Festival (CBTF) returns to Central Ohio for the 13th year this July 5th and 6th at the Columbus Performing Arts Center Van Fleet Theatre. The theme for 2025 is Still Standing Strong. It’s a theme that inspires hope, resilience, and love for one another. It’s about everyday people and their everyday lives and how they stand strong during adversity.
Mal by Meny Beriro from Queens, NY will be directed by Ariel Wiles. Beriro is the recipient of the Jean Dalrymple and Gilbert Ancowitz Playwriting awards (American Theatre of Actors) for PigeonHole and Settle Down.
Stumpworthy by Steven A. Butler, Jr. from Bowie, MD, will be directed by Alan Tyson. Beyond writing, Steven has worked in theater and film, adapting his stage plays into cinematic works, such as Veils: Requiem for Trayvon, which gained Hollywood recognition.
Dreams and Nightmares by Krystle Dellihue from Detroit, MI will be directed by Ariel Wiles. Krystle is a playwright/actor. Recent credits include Hattie: A Seat At The Table, Match Point and White Coat. Krystle “thanks the audience for their continued support and celebration of the arts.”
Scan to Begin by Monique Hebert from Renton, WA, will be directed by Stephen Woosley. Monique is a writer who is originally from Cleveland, Ohio but currently resides in Washington. Her plays have had staged readings at the Seattle Playwrights Salon, The Pocket Theatre, and 18th & Union in Seattle.
A Razing in Missouri by Susan Lily Jackson from San Francisco, CA, will be directed by Jessica Gibson. Jackson has been writing plays for about ten years. beginning with the Award-winning play about her mother's decline; her main emphasis has been focusing on mature female characters who face a crisis of conscience.
My Handsome Black King by Devin Porter from El Paso, Texas, will be directed by Faye Ray. Devin is a playwright, poet, and fiction writer who has collaborated with institutions and companies such as Columbia University, Negro Ensemble Company, Fade To Black Festival, Alter Theater, Forward Theater Company to name a few.
Prayer and Moon Pies by Ivan Rome from Columbus, GA will be directed by Lisa Bynum. Ivan is a playwright, actor, and filmmaker who loves to write stories about Black folks living our everyday lives; filled with our humor, our hearts, our dreams, and everything in between. His films have screened at several Academy Award qualifying festivals.
Blue Skies, Green Grass written and directed by Julie Whitney Scott from Columbus, OH. Julie is an award-winning playwright/actor/director and is also the founder and Artistic Director for the Columbus Black Theatre Festival. This play is part of the Youth Storytellers on Stage Workshop.
