If I’ve ever existed in a singer’s demographic, I’m in Clairo’s. I’ve played Clairo’s songs from the Atlanta singer’s newest album CHARMED from ANONROCKNROLL.
I’m Charmed by Clairo. I took the 2 from Campus and jumped off near the North Market.
Clairo walked out into the sold-out Kemba Pavilion in almost a prom dress. The original of Wu’s, “Tears” boomed into the evening. I stood around as high school, middle school, and college kids were enamored at a brunette from Atlanta, Georgia’s entrance. Clairo sat on the stage and drank booze with Clairo’s band while the Wu-Tang original seemed like pure essence.
I was confused why Clairo and Clairo’s band were just sitting on the stage. Until I realized Clairo was partaking in something I’ve done a zillion times. Bumping Wu and drinking. Clairo is like if Fiona Apple’s peer is El Michael’s Affair instead of Alanis Morrisette. Fiona Producer John Brion equals Leon Michels in our appreciation of women who make music with an ambition of satiating those who like Nina Simone but discovered Nina Simone died in 2003.
Except she’s much younger. Clairo’s politics are of a progressive woman who collects punk records. She follows Alexandria-Ocasio-Cortez on Instagram. She reminded me of punk girls I know. Except instead of Punk records, Clairo bumps records legendary rap producers sampled or would like sampling. I’m certain Clairo owns a record player. She’s down with the Big Crown Record community. Big Crown is El Michal’s Affair’s label. El Michel’s Affair covers Wu Songs with an intent of sounding Stax Records instead of Wu. Big Crown releases music by The Roots’ Dave Guy, Lady Wray and others as well as El Michel’s Affair’s songs. El Michel’s Affair works with Black Keys, and Black Thought of the Roots. Clairo contains extended Columbus Culture. I promise.
I stood there laughing because I’d walked into a sold-out venue and saw every young woman emulating someone who seemed like someone I would date. Young women’s current role model is a pretty DSA lady who likes Vintage rap influences. Clairo sipped a cocktail while I responded like Roots just brought out Pete Rock as a surprise guest.
Clairo’s and Clario’s band launched into NOMAD off of Charm. Clairo’s band resembled a 1950s or 1960s band. Clairo delivered purity. Clairo’s presence wasn’t of a iconic superstar.
She seemed like a young woman whose political views and songs stumbled upon a stage in front of a sold-out outdoor pavilion. Clairo presence dazzled 5,200 people who showed up while Clairo and Clairo’s band drank while bumping vintage sounds
Clairo seemed like she took a show in Columbus without knowing if people would attend. She seemed liked an introverted, composed woman who felt relief when she found understanding. Clairo asked if we could slow dance with Clairo during Slow Dance.
Clario’s flute player made you think of Andre 3000. I realized the future of rap influence on non-rap music was doing something better than Nu Metal.
A bulk of music lessons any Hip Hop writer existed in, dominated the stage from someone who is 26 with a young audience.
Taylor Swift installed a record player in every young woman’s room. Kamala Harris is playing Stevie Wonder and Mingus like I’m a freshman while figuring out records which are the essence of this dynamic culture.
Clairo was now making records digging part of a feminine allure. Clairo played Terrapin about nine songs in.
Her backdrop changed several time, The lighting would change from a full band with interesting instruments into illuminating Clairo as a starlet.
Clairo would walk over and played a classic keyboard. Clairo seemed astonished and chagrined. She thrifted this dress she thought was cute. She owned some rare, weathered instrument which she thought was cool. Clairo friends were really into cell phones. Clairo owns a cellphone but thinks records and instruments look and sound cool. People thought Clairo was strange for learning about something she wanted as a dream vocation.
Clairo played Amoeba which isn’t about Amoeba Record Store but still adds into truth: Vinyl outlasted the CD.
Clairo then sang, “Happy Birthday,”
It wasn’t my birthday but everything felt like “I’m celebrating my birthday!” Who would’ve known. Clairo jumped into van um, a tour bus. 5,200 people showed up. It was funny the amount of women who resembled Clairo everywhere. I feel like comparing Clairo and Erykah Badu wouldn’t be exact. Clairo’s prom dress changed into a raincoat while crooning anonanonanonanon and on in front of a cosmic backdrop. Clairo felt like if Badu and Bjork were a shy suburban girl who liked Jane Birkin. Clairo’s show was already the quality Charm implied.
Clario soon launched into Sexy2Someone which is about a need for coveting. Columbus’ entire outdoor pavilion sung along. Clario show’s finale was Juna.
Clairo entered with a cocktail while conjuring Wu. Clairo left the stage after playing Clairo’s most popular songs.
I walked into the Short North while looking at Kamala voting signs.
