Monday, September 15,  Columbus City Council President Shannon G. Hardin and Columbus Mayor Andrew J. Ginther announced that the city is now accepting applications for the newly formed LGBTQ+ Affairs Commission.

The LGBTQ+ Affairs Commission was formed in July through Ordinance 1412-2025 to ensure that the voices and needs of LGBTQ+ residents are represented at the highest levels of city government. 

“As we open applications for the LGBTQ+ Affairs Commission, we’re calling on community leaders to help shape a city where every voice is valued and every resident belongs,” President Hardin said. “While LGBTQ+ people face growing challenges across our state and nation, this Commission will stand as a beacon of inclusion, accountability and progress. I invite all advocates, organizers and everyday residents who are committed to this work to join us in building a stronger, more welcoming Columbus for all.”

The Commission will consist of 13 volunteer members who represent the full diversity of Columbus’ LGBTQ+ community. Eligible applicants must be 18 years of age or older, reside within the City of Columbus and complete a background check upon selection.

The Commission will meet at least quarterly, with additional time commitments for committee work. Expected projects will include:

• Advising Columbus City Council and the mayor on issues affecting the LGBTQ+ community
• Recommending measures to enhance health, safety, economic opportunity, affordability, mobility and cultural opportunities for LGBTQ+ residents
• Promoting access to government and accountability on matters impacting LGBTQ+ communities
• Coordinating and participating in educational programs that foster equal treatment, understanding and inclusion
• Facilitating public conversations, forums and educational gatherings to develop solutions for issues facing LGBTQ+ residents

“The creation of the Columbus LGBTQ+ Affairs Commission marks an important milestone in our city’s ongoing journey toward equality, inclusion and justice,” said Mayor Andrew J. Ginther. “This Commission will help ensure that community voices directly shape policies, programs and services that affect LGBTQ+ residents. I encourage passionate and committed individuals to apply and bring their experiences, talents and leadership to this work. Together, we can build on our progress and create a more inclusive future for all who call Columbus home.”

Applications are open now through Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2025. Applications will be jointly reviewed by Columbus City Council and the Mayor’s Office, and appointments will be made by the end of the year.
