At a press conference today, Everyday People for Positive Change announces its finding of "no confidence" in Columbus city council, illustrating the "pay to play" nature of our city council at an apparent site of 'pay to play" politics, while presents our plan to build public confidence in our city council by reforming local campaign finance laws -- despite city council's unlawful objection.
Recent press reports have announced a city developer for the former McNabb Funeral Home site. A review of campaign finance documents show over $25,000 in contributions to Columbus elected officials by the development team, including a $5,000 contribution from an out-of-city and first-time-contributor to Mayor Ginther just two weeks before that contributor was named a co-developer.
Everyday People has proposed caps on campaign contributions to city council, yet city council has indicated it would not allow the issue on the ballot because it addresses campaign finance -- an unlawful act to violate our constitional right of referendum. City council also promotes expansion of at-large voting, which would likely be violative of the voting rights of Columbus Blacks (under Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act of 1865). Everyday People begins it campaign to educate voters on these critical issues whereby our city council is repressing the civil rights of Columbus citizens.
