Details about event

Wednesday, June 1, 12:30pm, this on-line event requires advance registration

Come out to learn an introduction to gender, sexuality, and the history of Pride from an abolitionist and Black feminist lens.

We’ll cover information on pronouns, gender identity, and offer a breakdown of each part of the acronym LGBTQIA+ — including historical notes on what it’s meant to be “queer.”

You will have the chance to learn about Black LGBTQIA+ people throughout history, gender diversity around the world, and the radical roots of Pride.

Pride was borne out of Black queer and trans resistance to police and other oppressive forces, yet today we see the continued whitewashing of Pride’s history in the modern pride celebrations that are heavily corporatized and policed. These put LGBTQIA+ people — particularly Black queer and trans people — directly in harm’s way. The State has no place in our Pride spaces, and rainbow capitalism is directly opposed to our liberation. Join us in discussing all this and more during LGBTQIA+ 101! This “lunch and learn” will be facilitated by Black Queer and Intersectional Collective (BQIC) a grassroots organization by and for Black lgbtqia+ people. This “lunch and learn” is open to all accomplices and comrades.
