The Protest started in the middle of June.
The troubles are caused by the (pro- Beijing) Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam, who attempted to pass the fugitive bill against the will of most Hong Kong people.
Up until this very minute, large scale protest and confrontation between police and Hong Kong citizen is still going on and unlikely to die down soon.
Carrie Lam declared a full withdrawal of the fugitive bill on September 4th. There are already over a thousand peaceful protesters being arrested, and the unlawful brutality done by the police has caused countless injuries.
It is already too little too late.
As I am quoting a widely shared message on media among Hong Kongers:
“It’s too late for the government withdrawing the bill now. In the past three months, Hong Kong people have a clear message to the government that they have to meet our FIVE DEMANDS but to no avail. Hong Kong people have even been limited on the freedom of protests and demonstrations. And at the same time people have witnessed not one, not two, but dozens of incidents involving the unnecessary arrests, and unacceptable brutal violence force by HK Police on protesters and citizens. The withdrawal has no significance towards the present situation. We demand our five appeals to be answered by the government and the HK Police Force to take FULL responsibilities for what they have done in the last three months. The Liberation of Hong Kong Movement, or the so-called “Water Revolution” will continue until our demands met.”
So, you might ask, what do the people of Hong Kong want?
After three months of seesaw battle, the demand has gone from withdrawing the fugitive bill to pressing for universal suffrage, and inquiries into alleged police brutality. Asking people here why they are protesting will nearly always get you the same answer -The five demands:
1. Full withdrawal of the extradition bill.
2. A commission of inquiry into alleged police brutality.
3. Retracting the classification of protesters as “rioters.
4. Amnesty for arrested protesters.
5. Dual universal suffrage, meaning for both the Legislative Council and the Chief Executive.
Refusing to make peace with the protesters and answering the Hong Kong citizens demands, the pro-Beijing government continues to use disproportional ’police’ violence to repress Hong Kong people for their given right .
To explain it in more details, I am quoting a message from the writer/reporter Richard Scotford that sums up the crims committed by the Hong Kong Police :
““Let’s be absolutely clear, Hong Kongers on protests don’t hate police, what we hate are bad policing and bad police.
• Looking scruffy, not wearing your required hat, and having unpolished shoes is bad policing.
• Enforcing an old colonial, unjust law of illegal assembly, on a modern, sophisticated city like Hong Kong is bad policing.
• Hog-tying protesters, breaking their bones and sexually harassing them when they are arrested for illegal assembly is bad policing.
• Using guns and chemical weapons against people with umbrellas is bad policing.
• Dehumanising the majority of society by referring to them as cockroaches is bad policing.
• Letting triad gangs run amok with no consequences is bad policing.
• Colluding with triads to create a climate of terror is bad policing.
• Shooting CS gas at residents is bad policing.
• Not wearing your ID numbers, even though it’s regulation, is bad policing.
• Using ID checks to intimidate and oppress Hong Kongers is bad policing.
• Breaking regulations on the use of weapons is bad policing.
• Getting into angry arguments with residents is bad policing.
• Blatantly lying or spreading false rumours in press conferences is bad policing.
• Using methods designed to prevent terrorism to target HK democracy protesters is bad policing.
• Putting thugs in taxis or walking them up the street when they should be arrested is bad policing.
• Hiding you face so that you can break police regulations without consequence is bad policing.
I’m sure there’s many more.
The police can do a lot to rehabilitate their reputation. The only people who appreciate the police these days are Chinazis, triads, and low-level thugs. ““
Additionally, I would also like to use this chance to address. The majority of the protesters are highly educated professional. Among them are college students, doctors, lawyers, professors, and other highly skilled professionals. The China Communist propaganda machine has blocked and twisted all the related news for mainland Chinese to understand the truth of Hong ’Kong’s current situation. They misguided mainland Chinese to believes the protesters are the outcasts of the society funded by foreign countries. They are also labeling the movement as an act of Hong Kong trying to become an independent sovereign state from China, to provoke populism within the mainland, which is entirely misleading.
I hope this will give a more in-depth understanding of what’s happening in Hong Kong for those who want to know. Hong Kongers are free people who are willing to give up their life to pursue freedom. We are doing everything we can to fight against the overwhelming repression of the China/HongKong government. We do need all the possible supports from the people who believe in humanity and democracy to voice out for us!
Thank you! God bless Hong Kong! God bless America!
An ordinary Hong Kong citizen.
