When Ohioans voted to pass the Ohio Reproductive Freedom Amendment in 2023, we expected pushback from our legislators — but Ohio's anti-abortion extremists are going beyond simple pushback. They're actively exploring ways to outright circumvent the state constitution and the voters they owe their privileged seats at the Statehouse to.
In a perfect world, our state legislators would accept that the majority of Ohioans want accessible abortion care and adjust their policy priorities accordingly. Unfortunately, many anti-abortion extremists, like Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost, have dug their heels (and heads) into the sand. Instead of accepting their loss, they would prefer to waste time and money continuing to chip away at abortion access, including abortion medication and telehealth.
Abortion Forward Executive Director Kellie Copeland (she/her) and Deputy Director Jaime Miracle (she/her) recently spoke with reporters about the ongoing battle:
"The fact that our Attorney General is arguing against our Ohio Constitution in court is really something that the brain has a hard time wrapping its head around. All of these restrictions block people from getting the care they need and should be removed because we have laws that ensure that healthcare is safe," Miracle said. News 5 Cleveland
“When they passed the amendment, all of these restrictions that have been passed, particularly since 2011, did not just go away. I think that’s shocking to a lot of people. They’re like, well, we passed this amendment, that’s the law. But you know, the amendment didn’t automatically reverse all those laws. You look at the surrounding states and you’re like, oh, well, Michigan and Ohio both have amendments. Why are they different? They’re different because of that,” Copeland said. Cleveland.com
The Abortion Forward Field team is starting their year off on a positive note - celebrating all of the volunteers who made our work in 2025 possible!
If you've ever volunteered with us, attended an event, or shown us some love, join our January celebration and get some complementary Abortion Forward swag as a thank you! We'll also have food, drink, art supplies, and letter writing materials available.
