No More in 614!
The first week of March, 200,000 people will descend on Columbus for the Arnold Sports Festival. They will see the glistening skyscrapers and hip downtown eateries, but I-70, I-71 and OH-315 will take them to#OpportunityCity without having to see #TheOtherColumbus. So on March 4, we’re going to take these “invisible” problems to them. Columbus is a city of winners and losers. And Mayor Andrew Ginther and his wealthy friends would like us losers to stay in our crumbling neighborhoods patrolled by racist cops, supplied with water threatened by fracking, and governed by colluding, crony politicians. But some of us losers have had enough, and we’re coming out to say:
NO MORE IN 614!
This is a PEACEFUL and LAWFUL demonstration of activists and citizens who desire to raise up the racial, social, ecological, and economic injustice and inequalities that plague Columbus. We are determined to educate and strengthen each other by this fellowship. #TheOtherColumbus #UniteGreen#NoMorein614
We're excited to be joined by inspiring community leaders who are on the front lines of these issues. Speakers we are thrilled to present include Jonathan Beard, who was behind the recent Represent Columbus city council district reform effort; Tammy Fournier Alsaada, of the People's Justice Project; and Carolyn Harding, of the Columbus Community Bill of Rights. We will also hear from the family of Jaron Thomas, who suffered a brutal beating at the hands of Columbus Police before eventually succumbing to his injuries. His family is demanding answers from the CDP. Rubén Castilla Herrera will be speaking to the struggles of the latinx community in Columbus and Reema Jallaq will speak about issues impacting the Muslim community. Attorney Connie Gadell-Newton will share her knowledge about human trafficking in Columbus, and Bob Fitrakis of the Columbus Free Press and the Franklin County Green Party will make closing remarks.
We want a wide variety of issues represented, so bring your bodies and bring some creative signs. Let the city know where our priorities ought to be -- meeting the needs of the citizens in positive ways and through productive activism. No more brutality, no more bigotry, no more ignoring our issues.
We intend to have a short rally in the park prior to marching to the Convention Center. Our goal is to display for the media attending the Arnold Classic that the wonderful city of Columbus has a less glamorous side that still needs attention. We will walk peacefully and orderly, but if you have drums, tambourines, and megaphones you're encouraged to bring them. Let's make some political noise and get our issues noticed!
The Franklin County Green Party wholeheartedly believes that we are powerful through a combination of community activism and political activity. We're proud to sponsor this march and provide a platform for voices that MUST be heard so that this city can continue to move forward. It is only through compassionate governance that we can address the needs of all members of society. We also believe in non-violence, so please understand and respect that we want this to be a peaceful and lawful excercise of our rights to free speech and our desire for everyone to remain safe. We are in this city together, so let's take care of each other.
Let's March forth on March 4th!
