You submit a letter to your local papers critical of a major corporation’s activities in your town. Next thing you know, you are being sued for defamation. How can that be? You have First Amendment rights to free speech, right? It’s called being SLAPPED, a legal device that corporations use to discourage people from speaking out against important public issues that threaten their profits. Central Ohioan Mike Kovalik, long concerned with corporations’ attempts to block citizens from speaking out against policies that harm our communities, will provide an introduction to SLAPP suits. The one-hour session on SLAPP is part of Move to Amend’s “Speaking of Democracy” series that dives into local concerns. All are welcomed to join.
