People protesting

Teach-ins, climate ribbons highlight events across the state July 8-10

This summer, activists from across the country have held mass protests in New York City calling on Citibank to stop loaning to and underwriting fossil fuel projects that are driving the climate crisis responsible for 100+° heat domes in June, Category 5 hurricanes in July, and other ongoing disasters.

Now the action is coming to Columbus. On July 9, Third Act Ohio and allied organizations will hold a Teach-in and Rally against Plastics Incineration from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on the public sidewalk in front of Huntington Bank Center, 41 S. High St., in Columbus.

The event is part of a series of Summer of Heat events in Cleveland, Columbus, Athens and Cincinnati that include teach-ins on the false promise of chemical recycling, bank protests, and climate ribbon trees.

“Some of the biggest financial institutions and insurance companies enabling the industries at the root of the climate crisis have a strong and growing presence in Ohio,” said Mary Beth Naim, co-facilitator of Third Act Ohio. “We want to raise awareness among Ohioans and tell these banks to stop making Ohio a sacrifice zone.”

Events the week of July 8-10 include:

Tuesday, July 9, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Teach-in and Rally against Plastics Incineration, Huntington Bank Center, 41 S. High St., Columbus. Huntington has a climate problem in Ohio: They are funding the toxic “chemical recycling” – aka incineration – facility for plastic waste in Licking County. False promises about plastic waste give the fossil fuel industry an excuse to pollute. Tell Huntington to stop making Ohio a climate sacrifice zone!

Wednesday, July 10, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Climate Action, Athens County Court House, 1 S. Court St., Athens. JPMorgan Chase Bank is the No. 1 funder of fossil fuels in the WORLD, and the No. 1 funder of fracking, including most of the oil and gas companies trying to frack Ohio state parks and public lands. Science confirms we must invest in clean energy now. This event will host an information table and climate ribbon activity.

Wednesday, July 10, 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.: Climate Ribbon Activity, Burnet Woods, 3298 Clifton Ave., Cincinnati. Enjoy the music in the park while you learn about the climate crisis and take part in our interactive art installation, the Climate Ribbon project.  On the ribbons we will write the answer to “What do you love and hope to never lose to the climate crisis?” The climate ribbon project uses art and ritual to make tangible what we each stand to lose to climate chaos.
