In April, several federal agencies brought about arresting a Columbus man they claim is a member of Tren de Aragua,  without offering any details . Since then, they've been blasting his picture all over social media. 

When I saw his blurred face and rumpled clothes, flanked by federal agents in riot gear, my heart sank. I didn't see anyone to fear. I saw a regular man at the dawn of what should have been another day of work. In his blurred face, I also saw the ghost of a person who might soon be “disappeared” to a torture camp in El Salvador, by our own US government.

On Instagram, this man's sister bravely  responded  to the FBI post mocking her brother:

“For the FBI and police, before arresting anyone, please take the time to check their police and criminal records. The one you have there is my brother, and they arrested him without even knowing or investigating his background. Please find out, investigate.”

English translation:

"For those with the FBI and police, before arresting someone first take the time to find out their police record and criminal history. That person you have there is my brother, and you arrested him without understanding or investigating his priors. Please find out, investigate."

I spoke with her. She is living in shock and fear. His brother came to the United States to work and contribute. To take care of his family. To make them proud. The fact that he's now being accused of being a gang member is not only false — it's surreal.

The man is wearing a “Stronger Together” shirt, for crying out loud. The irony is clear.

We made contact with his sister, and he's been transferred to an immigration jail far from Ohio. We're doing everything we can to help him find a good lawyer. That's what we can do at this moment. And we can only do that because YOU are standing with us.

En abril, varias agencias federales se jactaron de haber arrestado a un hombre de Columbus que acusan de ser miembro del infame Tren de Aragua, sin presentar evidencias. Desde entonces, difunden la foto del arresto por todas las redes sociales.

Mi corazón se desplomó cuando vi a la víctima con rostro borrada y ropa arrugada, rodeada de granaderos federales. No vi en el detenido a una persona a que temer, sino un hombre común recién levantado a lo que debería ser un día más de trabajo. En su cara borrada, vi también el fantasma de una persona que pronto podría ser “desaparecida” a un campo de tortura en El Salvador por nuestro gobierno estadounidense.

La hermana del detenido tomó Instagram para replicar con honra a la publicación del Buró Federal de Investigaciones (FBI) que burlaba de él:

“Para los del FBI y policía, antes de arrestar primero tómense el tiempo en averiguar sus récord[s] policivos y antecedentes penales. El que tiene allí es mi hermano, y lo arrestaron sin conocer ni investigar sus antecedentes. Por favor averigüen, investiguen.”

Busqué a la hermana valiente. Vive ahora pasmada en terror. Su hermano migró a los EE.UU. para laborar y contribuir, cuidando a su familia, para darles orgullo. La denuncia de pertenecer a una mafia no sólo es falsa, sino francamente surrealista.

En la foto porta una camisa rotulada “Más fuerte unidos” —la ironía es palpable—.

La hermana informa que le transfirieron a un centro de detención para inmigrantes lejos de Ohio. Hacemos lo que está en nuestro poder para proveerle un abogado digno. Es la única medida que esté a nuestro alcance por el momento —y eso es gracias a que USTEDES están con nosotros—.
