To ensure the rights of newly-emancipated black Americans after the Civil War, Congress ratified the Fourteenth Amendment that guaranteed full citizenship and “equal protection of the laws” to all Americans. Within twenty years, powerful interests hijacked the Amendment to advantage them over “We the People.”

Learn about the Fourteenth Amendment, the limitations of its lofty promises, and what this means for Ohioans today, especially Ohioans of color, as illustrated in the “Qualified Immunity” doctrine that allows officials to override citizens’ constitutional rights.

Guest speakers: Charles Peterson, Chair of Africana Studies, Oberlin College; and Cynthia Brown, Coordinator of DeEscalate Ohio Now, Ohio’s leading organization in the campaign to repeal Qualified Immunity.
