Indigenous, Native, and Two-Spirit communities have long faced significant barriers to accessing equitable healthcare. For Indigenous LGBTQ+ individuals, particularly those who identify as Two-Spirit, these challenges are amplified by the intersecting impacts of colonialism, racism, and anti-LGBTQ+ discrimination. Historical trauma, cultural displacement, and a lack of culturally affirming care contribute to disproportionately high rates of mental health issues in these populations. Research highlights that Indigenous LGBTQ+ youth, for instance, experience higher rates of depression, anxiety, and suicide risk compared to their non-Indigenous peers.
According to The Trevor Project, Indigenous LGBTQ+ youth are 54% more likely to report seriously considering suicide, and 23% report attempting suicide within the past year — numbers that significantly surpass the broader LGBTQ+ youth community. These staggering statistics demonstrate the need for healthcare environments that affirm both their LGBTQ+ and cultural identities.
This OutTalk will dive into the distinct healthcare needs and disparities faced by Indigenous and Two-Spirit individuals. Panelists will explore systemic barriers to care, mental health disparities, and the importance of incorporating traditional knowledge and healing practices into healthcare. Through actionable strategies, this discussion aims to empower healthcare providers to create more inclusive and equitable spaces for Indigenous LGBTQ+ communities.
