Join us for the concluding episode of our three-part series, where we explore the healthcare challenges faced by LGBTQ+ communities of color dealing with disparities. In this episode, we turn our attention to AAPI [Asian American and Pacific Islander] communities. AAPI LGBTQ+ adults unfortunately fare worse than their non-LGBTQ+ counterparts in the areas of mental and physical health, economic security, employment, and discrimination.
The statistics are telling: AAPI LGBTQ+ adults experience worse outcomes than their non-LGBTQ+ counterparts. Shockingly, over 21% of AAPI LGBTQ+ adults have been diagnosed with depression, a high contrast to the 7% rate among their non-LGBTQ+ peers. Meanwhile, AAPI LGBTQ+ youth face unique and significant challenges, with at least 41% not out to both parents, in contrast to the 29% average among LGBTQ+ youth. Pacific Islander/Native Hawaiian LGBTQ+ youth report even higher levels of discrimination compared to other AAPI ethnicities.
As a result of these various social and economic disparities, a number of conditions, such as cancer, diabetes, asthma, and high blood pressure, are of greater prevalence in AAPI LGBTQ+ communities compared to their cisgender and heterosexual counterparts. In this OutTalk, our panelists will engage in an interactive discussion, shedding light on these unique challenges and offering guidance for achieving equitable and inclusive care.
