Bridging the Divide: Understanding why we disagree and how to talk across differences without losing our minds.

Why do people see the world so differently — and why do political conversations so often turn into tense battles instead of meaningful discussions? Inspired by Jonathan Haidt’s The Righteous Mind: Why Good People Are Divided by Politics and Religion, this interactive workshop dives into why we think the way we do, how our values shape our beliefs, and — most importantly — how we can talk to those we disagree with and not lose our cool.

Rooted in the mission of Braver Angels, this workshop focuses on learning to really listen, speak our own truth, and sometimes find common ground in unexpected places. Whether it is in your community, workplace, or around the dinner table, this workshop will help you move past frustration, truly understand where others are coming from, and have deeper, more connected conversations — even with those whom you strongly disagree.

Objectives:

Learn Why We See Things Differently: Dive into how differences in thinking, values, and lived experiences shape our views — and why good people can disagree on key issues

Develop Skills for Constructive Dialogue: Practice skills for engaging in meaningful, curiosity-driven dialogue that goes beyond debate to deeper understanding and mutual respect

Find Common Ground: Explore shared values and unexpected areas of agreement and learn how to build bridges — even when we do not see eye-to-eye.

Tickets are $10/person; more if you can; less if you can’t. Please send payment to paypal.me/olf2019 and include the first and last names of each attendee.

Workshop Format: Expect a mix of thought-provoking lectures, Q&A, interactive exercises, and practical tools that you can use right away.
