Thursday, August 12, 7-9pm, this on-line event requires advance registration

This is a special event for those living in and around Upper Arlington (UA) to define and map their community in advance of new state and Congressional district maps which will soon be drawn. Participation is limited to 25 because there will be lots of discussion and interaction. We are even asking participants to do a little bit of “homework” ahead of the event. (Don’t worry, it’s very limited and there will be no grading!)

Why do this in UA? After all, it’s a city. Doesn’t that define the community?

Maybe.

The non-partisan Fair Districts Coalition has been educating the public about the new redistricting rules. The next step is this activity — Community Mapping. We will not be drawing district maps; we are just defining our community. Community maps enable citizens to think about, envisage, and defend their community.

These maps can be used as building blocks when creating district maps. When you advocate or testify publicly to keep your community whole, you will be able to articulate why and use a map to illustrate your well-thought-out points. Fair Districts will be using citizen-drawn maps to draw sample maps and evaluate the maps drawn by the Ohio Redistricting Commission and the Ohio legislature.
