A coalition of grassroots organizations today launched a coordinated, nationwide economic shutdown from November 25 to December 2, demanding an end to corporate rule, political corruption, and the removal of the Trump administration.
The coordinated campaign, dubbed the Mass Blackout, urges Americans to completely withdraw their participation from the consumer economy during the busiest and most profitable shopping week of the year, including Black Friday (November 28) and Cyber Monday (December 1). That includes halting all spending, canceling subscription services, avoiding ad-driven platforms such as streaming services, and refusing to work.
Organizers note that Small Business Saturday (November 30) is exempted from the blackout, and participants are encouraged to use that day to invest in community-based, ethical alternatives to major corporations, preferably paying with cash.
“This isn’t symbolic,” said Isaiah Rucker Jr., founder of Blackout the System. “We are living under a political system captured by special interests, where billionaires and corporations write the rules. Congress serves donors, not the American people, and democratic norms are being dismantled in front of our eyes, with corporate backing. This campaign is about showing them where the power truly lies, with the people.”
Carlos Álvarez-Aranyos, founder of American Opposition, added: “We’re so proud to witness this merging of efforts. It truly represents the unity this movement has always aspired for. We all want what’s best for our nation and we recognize and value each other. In that way, we’re modeling the kind of democracy we want to deliver.”
The campaign originated as a unifying effort between previously separate actions by Blackout the System, The People’s Sick Day, American Opposition, the Money Out of Politics Movement, and The Progressive Network, among others, all of which had independently called for boycotts during Cyber Week.
