“Muggs [James Thurber’s dog] Statue Unveiling and Green Lawn Cemetery Tour,” hosted by Thurber House
Saturday, August 28, 11am-1pm, Green Lawn Cemetery [Huntington Chapel and James Thurber’s graveside], 1000 Greenlawn Ave.
Join us at scenic and historic Green Lawn Cemetery to celebrate the work of James Thurber and his dog Muggs, made infamous in Thurber’s short story, “The Dog That Bit People.” We will unveil a life-sized bronze statue of James Thurber’s iconic dog, at the Thurber family plot (plot 50), in Muggs’ honor.
A short cemetery tour will start at Huntington Chapel at 11am, ending at 11:45am at the Thurber family lot for the unveiling of the Muggs statue. Hot dogs and drinks will be available for purchase, and a second tour will retrace our steps back to the chapel for those who had missed the earlier tour. Enjoy one last summer event outdoors in one of Columbus’s most beautiful cemeteries!
This event is free, but donations are appreciated. They will be split between Thurber House and the cost of the statue’s granite base. Registration is not required.
Schedule:
• 11:am: Pre-unveiling cemetery tour begins at Huntington Chapel
• 11:45am: Muggs statue unveiling and festivities at James Thurber’s gravesite
• 12pm: Post-unveiling cemetery tour back to Huntington Chapel (if you missed the first tour)
