The Democratic Socialists of America [DSA] International Committee, with co-sponsorship from the DSA Palestine Solidarity Working Group, will present a panel discussion on the ongoing struggle against colonialism in the Middle East and Africa, from Palestine to the Western Sahara.

With the world’s attention once again centered on Palestinian resistance, it’s all the more important to see the interconnections between struggles against settler colonialism, oppression, and imperialism throughout the Middle East and Africa.

Nearly a year ago, the Trump administration brokered agreements, called the Abraham Accords, between Israel and governments across the Middle East and North Africa, including the Gulf monarchies and Morocco. Washington’s strategy for coaxing states into “normalization” included blackmailing the post-revolutionary government of Sudan and recognizing Morocco’s colonial occupation of Western Sahara. This means that the Abraham Accords have ramifications for anti-colonial struggles far beyond Palestine.

Though treated as a break with historic U.S. policy, the Abraham Accords are in sync with Washington’s long goal of normalizing the Israeli conquest of Palestine. The Biden administration has hardly rejected the results, while it cheers on the ongoing dispossession of Palestinians. This panel will address the significance of the accords for the Palestinian liberation struggle, the struggle in colonized Western Sahara, and the struggle for solidarity in the Persian Gulf States.
