Dialogue is increasingly recognized as a crucial component of education. Bringing dialogue into the classroom is easier said than done — especially when the conversation addresses controversial topics. In this interactive presentation, CEHV Associate Director Aaron Yarmel and Ariel Sykes will offer practical tips for showing care for all participants in a dialogue about controversial topics.
About the Facilitators:
Aaron Yarmel (PhD, MSc, MA), founder, is a dialogue facilitator, researcher, teacher, and a certified Consultant in the Logic-Based Therapy modality. He is the Associate Director of the Center for Ethics and Human Values of The Ohio State University. Previously, he was the founding director of Madison Public Philosophy, an organization that shares philosophy with the Madison, WI, community through public performances and Philosophy for Children programs.
Aaron has been invited by university centers, non-profit organizations, and schools to give workshops and talks about dialogue, philosophy for children, inclusiveness, conflict, ethics, activism, and community engagement. He holds a PhD and a MA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, an MSc from the London School of Economics, and a BM from the Eastman School of Music.
Ariel Sykes is an experienced educator with over 16 years of experiences in philosophy for children and dialogic pedagogy. She is an endorsed practitioner of the IAPC (Institute for the Advancement of Philosophy for Children) and has worked as part of a research project funded by the U.S. Department of Education to create a professional development and training program for teachers that help them successfully integrate inquiry dialogue into their classroom practice. Ariel holds her BA and MA in the field of philosophy and education.
Ariel is the Director of Mindbridge Education and was formerly the Assistant Director of the Ethics Institute at Kent Place School, a K-12 school for girls. Through these roles Ariel has integrated ethics across school curricula through events for parents, workshops for teachers and staff, individual course coaching, curriculum development, teaching, and student events.
