Saturday, April 22, 7pm, Columbus Mennonite Church, 35 Oakland Park Ave.

Confining Rupert Wates and his music to a single genre is an exercise in futility. With a career spanning nearly three decades and twelve albums, his works are described as “an eclectic mix of acoustic, melodic art/folk, with flavors of jazz, vaudeville and cabaret.” There’s definitely a little something for everyone, no matter their musical taste.

On Saturday, April 22, Rupert will be sharing all this and more as the featured act at a “coffeehouse concert” sponsored by the Columbus Folk Music Society here in Columbus.

Rupert began making music in the early 1990s in London and, since then, has won numerous songwriting awards; Folk And Acoustic Music Exchange has called him “a prime figure in American music.” His fingerstyle guitar work in combination with his lyrics aimed at capturing a moment in time or telling the stories of ordinary people create a musical experience like no other.

Prior to Rupert Wates taking the stage at 8pm, there will be a full two hours of additional folk music programming to enjoy!

Starting at 6pm, there will be an informal folk music jam, followed by an open mic segment for three different folk acts at 7pm. Finally, at 7:45pm, the audience will be invited to join in a brief folk music sing-along as a reminder of what is at the heart of folk music — music for the people made by the people.

A donation of $15 at the door is suggested, $10 for CFMS members.

There’s free parking in the Mennonite Church parking lot, also along Oakland Park Ave., and in the North Broadway Methodist Church parking lot [that is accessible by going north on Broadway Place] [it is just a short walk northward from that parking lot to the Mennonite church].

Hosted by Columbus Folk Music Society.
